Late November Weather: What to Expect & What to Pack
Late November to early December (Nov 26 – Dec 1) is widely considered one of the finest weeks of the year to visit Upper Dharamshala. It is crisp and clear with brilliant sunshine, excellent visibility of the snow-clad Dhauladhars, and slightly milder daytime temperatures than late December.
| Climate Dimension | Lower Valley (Sidhpuri, 1,300m) | McLeod Ganj (1,850m) | Satobari / The Clovers (1,950m) | High Ridge (Naddi, 2,160m) |

| Nighttime Low | 8°C – 10°C (Mild valley night) | 6°C – 8°C (Cool hill night) | 5°C – 7°C (Chilly cedar night; cozy indoors) | 3°C – 5°C (Coldest on the open crest) |

| Sunset Window | Sunset ~5:20 PM • Gentle dusk | Sun dips ~4:50 PM behind ridge | Sun dips ~5:00 PM • Rapid evening chill | Golden hour ~5:05 PM • Quick freeze after dusk |
| What It Feels Like | Light shirt or light cardigan | Light layers in sun; jacket in shade | Light fleece/sweater in sun; down jacket at night | Warm jacket, muffler & beanie for sunset |
Temp: 6°C – 8°C. Crisp mountain morning among the cedars. Wear a warm fleece or shawl while enjoying hot tea on the balcony.
Temp: 15°C – 18°C. High UV and crystal-clear skies make direct sunlight feel like 20°C. Perfect for walking in a shirt + light cardigan.
Temp drops 13°C → 9°C. As soon as the sun dips behind the Dhauladhars, mountain air cools fast. Put on a warm jacket and beanie.
Temp: 5°C – 7°C outside. Indoors at The Clovers, electric room heaters and warm quilts keep bedrooms at a cozy 20°C+.
What to Pack for Nov 26 – Dec 1
Comfortable Layering: Late November is warm during the day and brisk after dark:
- Daytime: Comfortable cotton shirts, light fleece pullovers, or cardigans for sitting in the sun.
- Evenings: Medium down jacket, woolen sweater, or fleece jacket for evenings on the balcony or in town.
- Thermals: Thermal innerwear (top & bottom) recommended for sleeping and early morning tea.
- Warm Accessories: Woolen cap/beanie, light scarf or muffler, and light gloves for sunset at Naddi.
- Footwear: Comfortable sneakers or flat walking shoes with rubber grip for forest strolls and temple paths.
- Sun Protection: Sunglasses, lip balm, and sunscreen (high mountain sunshine is strong and crisp).
Altitude & Comfort Notes
Zero Altitude Concerns:
- Altitude (1,950m): Oxygen levels are completely normal. There is zero risk of altitude sickness (AMS only occurs above 2,500m).
- Heating: The Clovers provides electric room heaters and warm blankets for cozy night-time sleep.
- Dry Mountain Air: Mountain winter air is dry. Carry vacuum flasks with warm water or herbal tea during outings.
- Relaxed Pacing: All sightseeing ends by 5:00 PM, leaving long, relaxing evenings together at the homestay.
Trek to the Snowline: Triund Ridge to Snowline Cafe (3,250m)
An optional, exhilarating day trek for active family members who want to touch high Himalayan snow and stand right beneath the towering granite cliffs of Moon Peak and Indrahar Pass. Because the trailhead at Galu Devi Temple is just 15 minutes by cab from The Clovers, this can be seamlessly executed as a daylight adventure while non-hiking family members enjoy a gentle day at Norbulingka or relaxing on the homestay balconies.
Galu Devi (2,100m) to Triund Ridge (2,850m)
Distance: ~6.5 km • Time: 3 to 3.5 hours • Terrain: Well-graded cobbled forest trail through oak and deodar woods.
- Trailhead Access: Take a 15-minute local mountain taxi (Maruti Alto/4x4) from The Clovers directly to Galu Devi Temple (saving 3 km of steep paved road walking from Dharamkot).
- The Forest Path: Gentle, steady gradient through ancient Himalayan rhododendron and evergreen oak trees. Spectacular morning vistas of the Kangra Valley widening below.
- Magic View Cafe (Halfway Mark, 2,500m): Famous stone tea shack operating since 1984 by Mr. J.R. Sharma. Perfect for a 10-minute rest, lemon-ginger-honey tea, and mineral water refill.
- The 22 Curves: The final 1 km features 22 short switchbacks before emerging onto the expansive grassy crest of Triund.
- Triund Summit (2,850m): Magnificent grassy plateau with direct, unobstructed views of Moon Peak (4,650m) and the vertical Dhauladhar snow wall. (Moderate hikers can turn back here for an easy 13 km round trip).
Triund Ridge (2,850m) to Snowline Cafe (3,250m)
Distance: ~3.5 km • Time: 1.5 to 2 hours • Terrain: Narrow alpine scree, granite boulders, and mountain slopes.
- Beyond the Crowds: 90% of day visitors stop at Triund. Passing behind the Forest Department ridge into the high alpine valley leaves all crowds behind.
- Alpine Landscape: Trees give way to dwarf juniper, alpine meadows, and massive granite boulders carved by ancient glaciers.
- Arrival at Snowline Cafe (3,250m): A legendary high-altitude rustic stone haven run by local Gaddi shepherds. Serves hot steaming Maggi, ginger tea, and omelettes.
- Touching the Snowline: In late November, the seasonal snowline descends to this basin. Snow patches and hard-packed alpine snow begin right around the cafe and the boulder moraines leading toward Laka Got (Illaqa Glacier).
- Turnaround Point: While the trail continues 2 km further to Laka Got (3,350m), doing so adds 4 km round-trip (making it 24 km total). Snowline Cafe at 3,250m is the recommended, safe summit for a 1-day trek.
HP Forest guards at Galu Devi checkpost strictly stop day trekkers from entering after 11:30 AM for safety. Starting at 07:00 AM – 07:30 AM avoids all queues and ensures entry.
Entry fee is ₹100 per person (payable in cash at the checkpoint counter). Every trekker must present an original Government Photo ID (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID). Keep the stamped receipt.
Forest guards inspect all backpacks. Disposable plastic bottles (Bisleri/Kinley) are prohibited or subject to cash deposit. Trekkers must carry reusable metal/hard-plastic water bottles or hydration bladders.
The road from Upper Dharamkot to Galu Devi is narrow and rocky. Do not take our chauffeured Innova Crysta up this road. Take a small local mountain cab (Maruti Alto / 4x4) from Satobari (~₹500 each way), pre-booking return pickup at 4:30 PM.
| Trail Waypoint | Elevation | Leg Distance | Leg Time | Terrain & Facilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Clovers to Galu Devi | 1,950m → 2,100m | 4.5 km (Road) | 15 mins | Narrow mountain road by local cab. Trailhead registration, checkpost, basic tea shops. |
| Galu Devi to Magic View Cafe | 2,100m → 2,500m | ~3.0 km | 1h 15m | Cobbled forest path through oak and rhododendron. Historic cafe (est. 1984), tea, water refills. |
| Magic View to Triund Ridge | 2,500m → 2,850m | ~3.5 km | 1h 45m | Steeper forested switchbacks ("22 Curves"). Expansive grassy meadow, Moon Peak wall, tea stalls. |
| Triund Ridge to Snowline Cafe | 2,850m → 3,250m | ~3.5 km | 1h 30m | High alpine scree, granite boulders, frost patches. Rustic stone cafe, early winter snow, Maggi. |
| Descent: Snowline back to Galu | 3,250m → 2,100m | ~10.0 km | 3h 15m | Continuous downhill descent. Trekking poles highly recommended to save knees. |
How the Trek Fits Seamlessly into the Family Holiday
The best day for this trek is Day 4 (Sunday, Nov 29) or Day 5 (Monday, Nov 30), when everyone is well-acclimatized to the mountain air. The family effortlessly splits into two synchronized groups for the daylight hours:
Active Trekker Group
- 06:45 AM: Local mountain taxi from The Clovers to Galu Devi Temple checkpost.
- 07:15 AM: Complete ₹100 registration and hit the trail in crisp morning mountain sunlight.
- 10:15 AM: Reach Triund Ridge (2,850m) for tea, photos, and breather.
- 10:45 AM: Push onward toward Snowline Cafe along the upper ridge.
- 12:30 PM: Arrive at Snowline Cafe (3,250m) — touch snow, eat hot Maggi, take photos beneath Moon Peak.
- 01:15 PM (STRICT CUT-OFF): Begin descent back toward Triund. Never delay descent past 1:15 PM so you finish well before dusk.
- 04:30 PM: Reach Galu Devi checkpost; pre-booked taxi pickup back to Satobari.
- 05:00 PM: Return to The Clovers for hot shower and evening chai.
Relaxed Leisure Group
- 08:30 AM: Sleep in; hot parathas and masala chai in the sunny garden courtyard.
- 10:30 AM: Chauffeured Innova drive down to Norbulingka Institute water gardens.
- 01:00 PM: Peaceful courtyard lunch beside koi ponds at Norling Cafe.
- 03:00 PM: Leisurely stop at Dharamshala tea gardens or local wool markets.
- 04:30 PM: Return to The Clovers for evening snacks and pakoras.
- 07:30 PM: Both groups reunite together for a warm, celebratory family dinner in the living room!
What to Expect on the High Trail (Nov 26 – Dec 1)
- Clear Weather Window: Late November is the driest week of the post-monsoon calendar with near-zero rain probability and pristine blue skies.
- Snow & Verglas Warning: Hard-packed snow patches and morning frost start appearing around Snowline Cafe and Laka Got (3,250m+). Shady granite boulders between Triund and Snowline can have slippery frost.
- Sun & Glare: High solar intensity at 3,250m. Sunlight bouncing off granite rock and snow patches is intense—polarized UV400 sunglasses are mandatory.
- Daylight Hours: Sunrise ~07:05 AM, Sunset ~05:22 PM. Mountain twilight fades quickly by 05:00 PM. The strict 01:15 PM turnaround from Snowline ensures you reach the road in daylight.
- Mobile Connectivity: Jio has intermittent 4G on Triund ridge (line-of-sight to valley). Airtel has sporadic signal. Beyond Triund toward Snowline, network drops completely. Download offline maps on Maps.me or AllTrails before leaving The Clovers.
Essential Gear for Snowline Trekkers
- Footwear: Proper trekking boots or trail shoes with deep rubber lugs (Vibram / Contagrip). Flat road sneakers will slip on frosty granite boulders.
- Clothing Layers: Moisture-wicking base layer + mid-layer fleece + lightweight down jacket or windbreaker in your daypack.
- Trekking Poles: Highly recommended (at least one pole per person)—critical for saving knees on the 1,150m vertical descent.
- Reusable Hydration: 1.5 to 2 liters of water in reusable bottles or a hydration bladder (single-use bottles are banned at checkpost). Carry electrolyte sachets.
- Small Daypack (20L–25L): To carry extra warm layer, water, camera, lip balm, and basic first aid.
- Certified Local Guide: A friendly local trail guide can be hired at Galu Devi / McLeod Ganj taxi stand for ~₹1,200 to ₹1,500 for the day.
